Description
Kiah B. Sewall (1807-1865), a native of Edgecomb and a Bowdoin College graduate, received a certificate to argue at the U.S. Supreme Court.
He was recommended by William H. Seward, then a senator from New York.
Sewall had studied law in New York before moving to Mobile, Alabama, in 1839. He first went there because of ill health, but soon decided to stay and join a law firm there.
He and his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall of Portland, built a house in Mobile, but she and their children often spent summers in Maine.
