Description
K.B. Sewall, who escaped from Mobile, Alabama, in August 1864 to avoid service in the Confederate army, wrote from a steamer leaving New York in April 1865 that he was about to return to the city where his wife and most of his children still lived.
Sewall wrote to his son Somers, detailing the items he was taking with him to his family.
He wrote, "We have passed through great events of late, the end of the rebellion is really come..."
