Description
K.B. Sewall wrote to his son Somers of the plans for the family -- parents and five children -- to leave Mobile, where they had lived since 1839, and head north to return to Portland.
Sewall, a native of Edgecomb, had gone to Mobile originally because of ill health. When he decided to remain and practice law there, his wife joined him.
Sewall had escaped from Mobile in August 1864 rather than join a Confederate regiment. He returned in May 1865 to settle affairs and take his family North.
Sewall died in Boston in August 1865, before the family reached Portland.
