Description
Edwin Cromwell (1908-2001) and his business, Thick and Thin Lumber, owned this field on the west side of the Main Road on Westport Island. He stored green, or freshly cut, lumber from his sawmill across the street.
Pictured are rough-sawn boards stacked with one-inch "stickers" (spacers) between each layer to allow drying. The lumber could sit here for six months to a year for proper drying, or seasoning.
Cromwell's mill was most active in the 1940s and the 1950s. The lumber pictured was harvested on Westport.
Edwin and his wife, Jennie, later ran a snack bar on the shore of this land which faces Montsweag Bay on the Back River. The snack bar was a popular destination for residents and summer visitors in the 1960s.
