Cyclone Timeline by Brooks, David, and Eva
Before
Before this disaster, life went
on just as it usually did in early
morning. People were doing morning
chores and getting ready for the new
day. Some people were already
working. The people of Hallowell were
not expecting a morning cyclone to ruin
their plans.
During
On a Tuesday morning in December, 1895, at 8:00
am, Chas A. Brown was a morning watchman on
the top level of the cotton mill. As he started
working, he heard an ominous ripping noise which
lifted the roof right above his head. Timbers, bricks,
gravel, and tarred paper began to fly around his
head as Brown ran to the other end of the mill.
Grover's Grocery Store was struck with a mass of
rubble. Little Vigril White was trapped inside the
store when this happening occurred.
The stable that was occupied by Simmons and
Stearns was crushed like an eggshell. A
horse was trapped inside a compartment
made by scattered debris that was barely bigger
than it's stable!
After
" A little boy named Virgil White was injured
in the cyclone. Both of his legs were broken as
well as his collar bone and right ankle. He was
carried to the clearwater pharmacy and treated
by Drs. Hamlet and Brooking. Plaster casts were
applied to his broken limbs and he survived the
ordeal."
With so much destruction, many people
would have given up right there and then. But
the people of Hallowell made do with what they
had. They used pieces of wood for fire and to
rebuild the buildings that were damaged. The
people of Hallowell were soon back on track.
