Corn canning was once a prominent industry in Maine and a major source of income for the state's residents. In the early 1900s, Maine had 111 vegetable canneries, most of which canned corn.
The food canning industry was central to the economy of many small Maine towns. Many towns in central and western Maine canned the produce that grew in their region: apples, corn, peas, or other products.
