Description
In the fall of 1861, Captain Black Hawk Putnam raised and commanded Company E of the First Maine Cavalry Regiment.
The regiment was mustered into service on October 31, 1861. He was wounded in the foot at the Battle of Middletown, Virginia. The bullet hole can be seen in the toe of his left boot.
Black Hawk Putnam was a member of the Northern Maine Regiment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), an organization of Union veterans, and of the 1st Maine Cavalry Association.
