Description
John Marshall Brown of Portland, serving in the 20th Maine in the Civil War, wrote from a bivouac near Sharpsburg to his sister, Ellen.
Brown discusses the march to Sharpsburg (Antietam), describing the battle from his vantage point, which was mostly away from the front.
