Description
Sgt. J.E. "Ned" Mitchell of the 10th/29th Maine Regiment wrote to Persis Blanchard of Cumberland, thanking her for presents and telling her he might not see her again before heading south.
Mitchell addressed Blanchard as "sister, but the two were not siblings.
He had mustered into the 10th Maine in 1861 and served with the regiment while it was guarding rail lines in Maryland.
He was back in Maine to reenlist and return to service with the 10th, later known as the 29th Maine Regiment.
