Description
Pvt. Marshall S. Phillips of the 5th Maine Regiment, somewhere in Virginia, wrote to his wife, Diana, in Auburn, saying the regiment was still in its winter camp.
He told her not to show the letter to anyone and wrote that he dreaded the upcoming spring campaign because his time in the army was so close to ending.
He also told her she would have to get someone to "plough and plant the gardin."
"I hope to see you all next June," he wrote.
