Description
Leonard Valentine of Westbrook, who was 22 when he joined the 25th Maine Infantry in September 1862, wrote to his parents from Camp Provost Guard, Virginia, in March 1863 to tell them he was "still alive."
He reported that he had to go into Washington, D.C., to collect his pay and while he was there he "took the opportunity to go round and see the sights." He visited the White House and the Capitol.
