Description

Sgt. Horace M. White, in a hospital at Aquia Landing, Virginia, wrote to his sister in Houlton to report that he finally had gotten mail from home -- after three months without any -- and that his wounded foot was healing.

White, a sergeant in Co. E of the Maine 1st Cavalry, accidentally shot himself in the foot in April 1863.

He wrote that he could try to get a furlough to return to Maine for a short visit. He assured her that he was being well cared for in the hospital.
