Sgt. Horace White about rumor of 1st Maine Cavalry, Virginia, 1862

Description
Horace M. White, a sergeant in the 1st Maine Cavalry, wrote to his sister (probably Angelia) in Houlton, hoping that she had not heard the rumors about Co. E, to which he belonged.
He wrote that a story had spread that 40 of the troops were killed and Capt. Black Hawk Putnam of Houlton had been taken prisoner. He said there was no battle -- and no Confederate troops in the vicinity.
He also reported on various soldiers in his regiment and on the region where he was camped.
He wrote, "We have not fared very well about our rations. I don't think we have ever had our full rations and it is all the fault of the company officers in my opinion."
