Description
Sgt. Horace White of Co. E, 1st Maine Cavalry, wrote to his sister in Houlton, describing the landscape near Winchester, Virginia, that was strewn with carcasses of horses and trodden fields of crops left from a recent battle.
He discusses what upcoming battle strategy might be.
The end of the letter is missing.
White was 25 when he enlisted as a corporal in the 1st Cavalry on Oct. 19, 1861. He was promoted to sergeant in 1862 and to commissary sergeant in 1863. He became a full sergeant in 1864
