A story by David Woodward from 1862
My great great grandfather, Rev. James Wells, was appointed by Israel Washington Jr., Governor of Maine on August 29, 1862, to serve as Chaplain to the 11th Regiment of the Maine Volunteers. He was age 47 when beginning this appointment, completed his commission and lived until 1892 when he was 77 years old.
Rev. Wells was a graduate of Bangor Theological Seminary (1848) and served as pastor to many churches in various states, including a brief stint as a missionary in Indiana (1848 - 1849) with the Congregational church.
