Description
Melville H. Philpot (1866-1950) married Almira "Myra" Bradeen (1865-1949) of Limerick on April 25, 1894. The couple lived in Limerick, where they operated a family farm. The Maine Historical Society's collections include both the groom's suit and the bride's wedding dress.
The three piece wedding suit consists of a black wool coat with tails, a black vest and black pants with white pinstripes. The coat and vest are edged with ribbon, likely once black but since faded to dark brown. Ribbon on the sleeves and breast pocket, along with six well-placed buttons, add detail. The coat includes a maker's label "M.W. Morris / Lawrence", likely Lawrence, MA based tailor Michael W. Morris, who operated on Essex St. around the time of the wedding.
