Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Citizens throughout the United States mourned the shocking loss of President Lincoln, after his assassination in 1865. Mourning badges, such as this, are examples of the nation’s grief. The rosette shaped badge, made of black and (once) white silk, was typical of what Union soldiers wore after the president’s assassination.
