Zénon Charette funeral card, 1979

Description

The son of Thomas Charette and Elise Daigle, Zénon Lucien Charette was born and raised in Fort Kent. He studied in Montreal and Toronto. Bishop Joseph McCarthy ordained him in Portland in 1935. He served in several capacities in Saco and Biddeford early in his career. He became pastor of Sinclair, in Aroostook County, in 1952. His last assignment was at Sainte-Luce, an overwhelmingly francophone parish, in Frenchville, where he served as pastor from 1960 to his death in 1979. He passed away during a vacation in Quebec's Gaspé peninsula.

Charette's time in Frenchville was marked by rapid change. The Sisters of the Holy Rosary moved to a new convent and the old structure, deemed unsound, was demolished. Much-needed repairs and improvements were made to the church. Some changes occurred as a result of the Second Council of the Vatican, for instance moving the altar and replacing the Stations of the Cross. Charette also helped ensure Catholic students could receive religious instruction under a release-time program following new Department of Education guidelines. Sainte-Luce hosted a regional Eucharistic congress in 1976.
