Description
During a logging operation on MacMahan Island, Westport Island lumbering contractor Alfred Cromwell had an accident that many said he was lucky to have survived. The crew was on deadline to cut a fire lane separating the forest from the summer cottages when his tractor upended. He was pulling a trailer and came onto ground that was soft on one side and hard ledge on the opposite side, when the front end of his Farmall M tractor flipped into the air, pinning him underneath.
Cromwell was extricated and rushed to the hospital for serious leg and shin trauma and lacerations, but was spared debilitating injuries to his legs, because his legs were pushed into the soft ground by the tractor draw bar.
Pictured are co-workers Bill Wright (l) and Herbert Cromwell, Sr. (r) trying to right the tractor.
