Description
Richard Anderson, founder of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT), attended the trail’s official dedication at Cap Gaspé, Quebec in Canada.
Anderson, a former Commissioner of the Maine Department of Conservation, conceived of the IAT in 1993 as an extension of the original Appalachian Trail north from its terminus at Katahdin into Canada. The IAT eventually expanded across the Atlantic Ocean into Western Europe and Northern Africa, with local trails following the original Pangea-era range.
The IAT was established and maintained as a network of both hiking trails and international relationships.
