Description

Fluent's Block, also known as Fluent's Hall, Fluent's Building, and the Union Mutual Building, was constructed in 1868 and designed by C.H. Howe for John M. Fluent. Located directly across from City Hall, the building housed retail stores, offices, and a popular venue called Fluent's Hall.

In 1871, the Union Mutual Life Insurance Company, now known as UNUM, granted Fluent a five-year, 50,000-dollar mortgage for Fluent's Block. Around this time, the company also moved its offices to the building.

By 1877, Union Mutual took possession of Fluent's Block through foreclosure, after which the building became known as the Union Mutual Building.
