Description
Photographer Marquis Fayette King created this stereograph of Fluent Hall, also known as Fluent's Hall, during the Maine General Hospital Fair in June 1873. Fluent's Block, a building built in 1868 on the corner of Congress and Exchange streets in Portland, housed Fluent's Hall.
C.H. Howe designed the building for John M. Fluent, Esq. The building featured storefronts on the first floor, business offices on the second, and Fluent's Hall on the upper floors. The venue quickly became a popular location for drama productions, parties, and events.
Fluent provided Maine General Hospital with free use of the hall for the event, which aimed to raise money for the hospital. Because activities occurred in Portland City Hall and Fluent Hall, workers constructed a bridge to connect the two during the event.
