Harrison Tweed Sheldon photograph album, Moosehead Lake, ca. 1910

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

An album created by Harrison Tweed Sheldon (1883-1933) of photographs taken during a trip to the Moosehead Lake region. Photos feature both the landscape and the traveling party canoeing, fishing, at camp, and transporting canoes using a horse-drawn cart, among other images.

Sheldon began traveling from New Haven, Connecticut, to Maine’s Katahdin and Moosehead Lake region for camping, canoeing, and fishing trips in his late teens. When he and Alice Cooper Stanton (1879-1967) married in 1915, the two chose the Katahdin area for their honeymoon. After the birth of their daughter, Anne (Sheldon) Swift (1916-2003), the family continued to visit.

First Harrison Sheldon and then Alice and Anne Sheldon documented their trips in photographs, albums, correspondence, and diaries. Anne continued to vacation in the area through at least 1951.
