Description
Hunting lodges in northern Quebec, in the Adirondacks, and remote areas of Maine became popular retreats for wealthy Americans in the late nineteenth century. Martin's Sporting Camps appear to have been part of this trend. Though locals may have also used the lodge, the map suggests that the owners hoped to draw tourists from all parts of the state. The map highlights the patchwork of state roads prior to the creation of the Eisenhower Interstate System.
Martin's Sporting Camps may have belonged to Patrick Martin, who operated a store in T17 R4 WELS (near Saint Agatha).
