Description
Caribou began to develop in the mid-nineteenth century thanks to logging, milling, and other activities along the Aroostook River. The community was incorporated as a town in 1859. Agriculture and the creation of the Loring Air Force Base in nearby Limestone also contributed to the town's growth. It attracted people of French descent from the St. John Valley and English speakers from other areas of the state. Caribou was chartered as a city in 1967.
Efforts to find the Belanger Inn or its proprietor in census records have, so far, proven fruitless. The card was not sent and bears no postmark nor any other date.
