Description
This image shows a large fire on Peaks Island on June 2, 1936. The June 3rd edition of the Evening Express reported that the fire destroyed seventeen buildings along Island Ave.
Portland Fire Chief Oliver T. Sanborn attributed the rapid spread of the flames to the wooden shingles of the houses. The disaster sparked a local movement to equip Peaks Island with adequate fire protection.
