Construction of the Mission Church at Head Harbor, 1910

Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission

Description

This image captures the Mission's construction of the Head Harbor Island Church in 1910. In 1881, the island’s population reached 117, driven by the growing granite quarry industry. After World War II, water transport for granite became too costly, as railroads and trucks offered a more efficient alternative from mainland quarries. Meanwhile, St. Regis loggers cleared the island’s dense virgin forest, prompting many residents to move to Beals and Jonesport. The church was dismantled in 1941, and its stained glass windows were repurposed in a Frenchboro church.

Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.
