Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission
Description
Children sit in a Head Harbor Island classroom, 1930. Sealand, on the southwest side, peaked at 117 residents in 1880, with 70 students in its school, which closed in 1937. The Maine Seacoast Mission built a church there in 1910. A granite quarry operated from 1890 to 1920, and a lath mill closed in 1928. Most residents were fishermen or farmers.
Island life was once convenient with water transport, but gas engines and better roads made the mainland more accessible. Many residents moved their homes by barge or across the ice. By World War II’s end, only two or three houses remained.
