Description
Five children enjoy winter fun on Head Harbor Island. Sealand, on the island's southwest side, peaked at 117 residents in 1880, with 70 students enrolled in its school that year. The school closed in 1937. In 1910, the Maine Seacoast Mission built a church in Sealand, and a granite quarry operated from 1890 to 1920 alongside a lath mill that closed in 1928. Most residents were fishermen or farmers.
Early on, island life was convenient since goods traveled by water. However, gas-powered engines and improved roads reduced the advantages for fishermen. Many residents moved to the mainland, often transporting their homes by barge or across the ice. By the end of World War II, only two or three houses remained on Head Harbor Island.
