Head Harbor residents standing in front of the Mission church, Jonesport, ca. 1920

Contributed by Maine Seacoast Mission

Description

Head Harbor residents pose in their Sunday best outside the Mission-built church, constructed in 1910. In 1881, the island's population of 117 thrived on the granite quarry industry. After World War II, waterborne granite shipping became too costly, as railroads and trucks efficiently transported granite from mainland quarries. St. Regis loggers also cleared the island's dense virgin forest, prompting many residents to move to Beals and Jonesport. The church was dismantled in 1941, and its stained glass windows were reused in a church in Frenchboro.

Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.
