Description
This hand-guided John Deere-manufactured plow would have been driven by a team of two or three horses. It has a twelve-inch bottom. Caryl Soucie photographed the plow as part of a student project at the University of Maine at Fort Kent in 1974. It belonged to J. Arnold McNamee (1917-1985), a long-time potato farmer in Fort Fairfield. McNamee provided a description of each object photographed on his farm. Many appeared to no longer be in use when Soucie visited.
Beginning in the 1830s, John Deere's farm implements and those of the company he founded revolutionized agriculture, often substantially increasing the quality of implements and the efficiency of farming. No date is given for the production of this plow; it may date from the early twentieth century, based on similar plows found in other collections, but this is uncertain.
