Description
This letter, dated December 30, 1843, was written by Philip Morse, an 89-year-old Revolutionary War veteran, to his grandson Philip M. Stubbs.
In response to a request from his grandson, Morse reflected on his military service during the American Revolution. He discussed the British evacuation of Boston, his regiment’s movements through New York and New Jersey, and crossing the Delaware River with General George Washington on December 25, 1776. He also described the surprise attack on Trenton, where American forces captured around 1,500 Hessian soldiers. According to the letter, he fought with the militia at the Battle of Bennington in 1777 and in Rhode Island in August and September of 1778.
Morse closes the letter with family news, New Year’s wishes, and an invitation to visit.
