Description
This document includes a military discharge certificate and a personal letter, both dated October 10, 1783, concerning Samuel Ballentine, a soldier in the British Loyalist regiment De Lancey's Second Battalion, under Captain Niles and Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hewlett. The certificate formally discharges Ballentine after five years of "honest and faithful" service, confirming he received all due pay, clothing, and provisions.
Attached is a letter from his sister, Elizabeth Ballentine, expressing distress over his long silence. She urges him to write and shares updates on the family: their sister married a seafarer, James and Francis Ballentine are married and have five children, and several relatives—their father, Uncle David, Aunt Betty, Herbert Cowen, and Paul Ballentine—have died. Elizabeth closes with warm regards and well wishes to Samuel and his family.
