Description

Horace Nicholas (Passamaquoddy, at left) along with other members of the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes, assisted Maine Gov. Carl E. Milliken (1877-1961) out of a canoe at Deering Oaks Park in Portland. Milliken, a Republican, was governor from 1917-1921.

The Indians had a "village" set up in the park as part of the Maine Centennial celebration.

This photo was on page nine of the Saturday, July 3, 1920 of the Portland Evening Express.
