Description
John Calvin Stevens (1855-1940), noted Portland architect, traveled to Europe and studied architecture.
He was an artist and member of the Brushians painting club in Portland. He painted this Spanish castle in 1910.
Stevens designed more than 350 buildings in Portland and more than 1,000 in Maine. His architecture came to embody the standard image of the American house built before 1950. Stevens became an influential architect because of his incredible drawing and painting skills.
