In the fall of 2019 painter William Manning and art historian Christopher Crosman discussed Manning's career as "the first native-born Maine abstract painter," beginning with comic-inspired drawings Manning made in his youth when hospitalized with polio, to hard-edged abstract paintings that were on display at the Yvette Torres Fine Art gallery in Rockland during 2019.
