A story by Biddeford Cultural & Heritage Center Voices of Biddeford project from early 1900s through 2023.
Voices of Biddeford interview with Lloyd LaFountain III on February 10, 2023
Lloyd was part of the third generation of attorneys who actively chose to have a law practice in Biddeford despite having other location options. He credited his trailblazer grandmother as his #1 influencer. Theresa Doyle LaFountain graduated from Biddeford High in 1913, attended Tufts Dental School and had a solo dental practice in Biddeford before women even had the right to vote! Lloyd was elected to the Maine House of Representatives and State Senate. After sharing a law practice with his father for 15 years, he was appointed by successive Governors to be Superintendent of the Bureau of Financial Institution since 2005.
Highlights from the interview include:
Despite having a French last name, his heritage was actually different than expected at first glance. Lloyd shared memories from his youth such as being part of the band performing at President Carter's inauguration, his summer jobs including toll collector on the Turnpike, what he remembered of Biddeford's downtown through the years, and his thoughts on today's developments. He recounts an interesting story of how he initially met his wife and reconnected while traveling in Europe. Other topics include: his family's long legacy of public service, a tradition that continues to this day with his wife and adult children, his experiences as a criminal law attorney, his role as an elected Maine Representative and Senator, as well as how his current government role regulates state-chartered banks and credit unions to assist consumers and assure safe banking practices
