Description
Founders of Biddeford's first mosque in 1915. The Albanian text reads: "THE COMMISSION OF THE ALBANIAN MOHAMMEDAN RELIGIOUS SOCIETY." Only Mustafa Fuat (Henry Kasem), seated front left, has been identified. From KALENDARI I VATRES I MOTIT 1918, p. 173.
This was the first recorded mosque in the United States. The men established the National Muhammadan Religious Society of America on April 5th, 1915. The men listed as the group's founders are likely the unidentified men in the picture, and are as follows: Mr. Qani Hilmi Bilishti, Mr. Iliza Permeti, Mr. Telha Kanan Panariti, Mr. Mustafa Fuat Kapshtica, Ahmet Veli Suli, p. 38. Services are believed to have been held at the Pepperell Counting House, which lent space for religious services.
