Description

A handwritten note on the back reads, "1925 Convention Lewiston." Due to other images in the collection that feature snowshoers and the special winter coats worn by the individuals in the foreground, the photograph was likely taken during the International Snowshoe Congress held in Lewiston. Snowshoe clubs became popular in Quebec and Franco-American communities in the early twentieth century.

Odile Ouelette (in whose collection it appears) or a close relative likely took this photograph. Ouellette (1898-1998) lived in Fort Kent and owned a clothing store, Chez Françoise. She traveled widely and eventually owned a vacation home in Florida.

The building in the background still stands at the corner of Lisbon and Chestnut streets in downtown Lewiston. The building then housed the Union Mutual Insurance Company and the Rivard Brothers Pharmacy.
