Lisbon Street, Lewiston, ca. 1949

Description

Lisbon Street was one of Lewiston's main business thoroughfares in the first half of the twentieth century. It featured many shops and businesses operated by Franco-Americans, including F. X. Marcotte Furniture. For a time, as this postcard shows, the downtown area was served by a streetcar system. The card offers a northward view of Lisbon Street from the corner of Ash. New England Furniture and the People Savings Bank feature prominently.

The card was sent by Helen Daigle to Miss Isabelle Daigle of Van Buren in 1949. It is postmarked from Lewiston. Helen Daigle (1921-2013) was born in Van Buren, Maine, to Dr. Wilfred J. Daigle and Rosalie Pelletier. She worked as a dental assistant for her father and later moved to New York City to be a nanny and dental assistant for Dr. Greengold. She returned to Fort Kent in the 1960s to care for her parents and to manage the Martin’s Community Drug Store. She was employed as a customer sales representative at the Maine Public Service for many years. Helen was a past member of the Fort Kent BPW (Business and Professional Women) and a member of Saint-Louis parish.
