Description
Portland Press Herald photographers captured schoolchildren in action, playing on a dirt-covered playground during recess. Their activities included swinging on the swings, playing dodgeball, and sliding down the slide.
Guy Gannett, the owner and founder of the Portland Press Herald, envisioned a simple mission for his newspapers: "Maine First." His papers catered to Maine readers, emphasizing local news and politics while heavily relying on quality photojournalism to enhance many of the stories.
