Description

Portland Press Herald photographers captured a group of Portland schoolchildren in line waiting their turn to use the slide. Two young girls slid down together, smiles on their faces, as the other children watched eagerly.

Guy Gannett, the owner and founder of the Portland Press Herald, envisioned a simple mission for his newspapers: "Maine First." His papers catered to Maine readers, emphasizing local news and politics while heavily relying on quality photojournalism to enhance many of the stories.
