Description
A bridge from Westport Island to the mainland had been sought by residents for many years. The expense was more than the State could justify given the small population of the island until contractor George Hinman proposed a less costly causeway.
State Senator Edward B. Denny, Jr. initiated action in the legislature. Denny became Chair of the Westport-Wiscasset Bridge Commission serving with local members Edwin Cromwell and John Swanton from Westport and Dr. Charles DiPerri and Harry Mosher from Wiscasset. This program memorialized the opening ceremonies on June 25, 1950.
