Description
The Home Economics program, originally called Household Arts at Farmington State Normal School, consisted of classes in sewing and cooking. The original location for the department was the Norton house. It was purchased by the school, renovated to create sewing rooms and a kitchen for cooking classes, and christened “The Annex” by the students.
By 1915, the program had out grown its Annex and the school purchased the Leavitt house, which became known as “The Cottage,” and served as a base for the program beginning in January 1916. Two upstairs chambers of the house were used as sewing rooms and the barn (which became the new “Annex”) remodeled into two labs: one for cooking and one that could be used for cooking or sewing.
